Twitter has posted its Top 10 Twitter Trends for 2010. Compiled from over 25 billion tweets, the list shows the top tweeted subjects. Twitter claims this list shows what is most important to us as a society. With Justin Bieber at #8, let's hope that isn't the case, or there is no hope for humanity.

1. Gulf Oil Spill
On April 10, 2010, an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico caused an oil well blowout that spewed oil into the Gulf for over three months.
2. FIFA World Cup
The most popular sporting event in the world took place during 2010 in South Africa. This top soccer event takes place every four years and involves teams from all over the world. Spain defeated Portugal to take the top prize.
3. Inception

One of the most anticipated movies of 2010, Inception grossed $62.7 million and debuted at #1 on its opening weekend. The film is a science fiction thriller and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ken Watanabe, Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy, Dileep Rao, Tom Berenger, and Michael Caine.
4. Haiti Earthquake
On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck near Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The quake was one of the largest recorded in the region and affected almost 3 million people.
5. Vuvuzela
The vuvuzela is a plastic horn used by soccer fans to make noise. The vuvuzela is about 2ft long and produces an annoying, monotone note. When a multitude of vuvuzela-wielding fans, the affect is undeniable.
6. Apple iPad
The iPad is Apple's much-anticipated entry into the tablet PC market. The iPad which sports a multi-touch display, is Wi-Fi and 3G enabled for Internet access. It's 9.7 inch display has a screen resolution of 1024x768 that is capable of displaying Web pages as well as multimedia.
7. Google Android
Android is Google's mobile operating system that is used to power Android mobile phones. Android offers an interactive touch-screen interface, and is based on the Linux operating system.
8. Justin Bieber
Justin Bieber is a singer and entertainer who was first discovered on YouTube in 2008. He has since risen to stardom and is, apparently, every fan girl's dream boat.
9. Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows
Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows is the much anticipated first half of the follow up to "The Half Blood Prince" film and is based on the last book of the Harry Potter series. The Deathly Hallows will be released as two movies, unlike the previous HP installments. Part two will be released in 2011.
10. Pulpo Paul
Pulpo Paul is an octopus in Oberhausen, Germany who somehow managed to predict the outcomes of Germany's 7 matches during the 2010 World Cup. It also correctly predicted the outcome of the final match. Pulpo Paul chose the winner by selecting from two containers of food, each one bearing the flag of the countries who were matched up.
